After a raucous week of campaigning filled with vicious personal and political attacks, Republicans will go to the polls in South Carolina on Saturday. Saturday also marks the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. The connection? This Republican primary is offering progressives the equivalent of a movie preview, but you don't want tickets to this show.

The voice over sounds something like this: "An incumbent President, who fights for working people, enters an election where his opponents believe corporations are people, and the rich are the only ones who are working hard. Corporate SuperPAC Studios is proud to mislead you and protect its wealthy donors from scrutiny this fall in: The Fight to Give More to Those Who Already Have the Most."

As we prepare for trick-or-treaters in costume or watch a scary movie tonight, the scariest thing we can think of is a ghoulish character popping out of our basement or hearing something go bump in the night.

But what about these scary headlines?

“Social Security Gambled on Wall Street”

Wednesday evening David will host a meet-and-greet reception at Chatham Hill Winery.  We hope to see you there!

We are nine days away from an election that will determine whether we move our country forward toward economic opportunity that is shared by all, or we set our country back decades -- on everything from public education to food and drug safety to a safety net our seniors can depend on.

I firmly believe we must get our budget back into balance and resume paying down the national debt.  It is an essential component of economic recovery.  After all, it was the deficits inherited from President Bush that left our government in such a dangerously weak position to fight the recession when it hit.

But balancing the budget requires making tough choices about priorities.  Unfortunately, the priorities of Republican leaders in Washington do not include America’s students, the very people on whom our country’s economic future depends.

Even after living in the Triangle most of my life, it never ceases to amaze me how the people of this region are constantly innovating, finding new opportunities to compete in this global economy.

Central North Carolina has never been a player in the fossil fuels market.  We don’t have big oil, gas or coal deposits.  But one area in which we are positioned to be a national leader is high-tech alternative energy and energy efficiency.  It’s a natural fit for a region that prides itself on its knowledge-based, entrepreneurial economy.

This weekend we commemorated the 9th anniversary of the attacks on our nation on September 11, 2001.

In my work chairing the Homeland Security funding committee, I am frequently reminded of those terrorist attacks and the work of countless individuals who have devoted themselves to the protection of their fellow citizens in the wake of that tragedy.
